UPDATE 2023: The virtual machines are no longer listed on Microsoft site. But there is now a Windows 11 virtual machine available.
Microsoft is becoming increasingly unsettling. A year ago, Microsoft made its Visual Studio development environment available as a free community Edition. This can be used without restrictions, even for commercial projects. But that’s not all.
While searching for a Windows XP image for a virtual machine, I stumbled upon another new feature from Microsoft today. They are offering virtual machines for all Windows generations, complete with a 90-day evaluation license. The accompanying license agreement and the desktop of the virtual machine even explain how you can use the virtual machine for more than 90 days. Incredible.
If Mr. Nadella continues to clean house at Microsoft like this, Windows might become open-source one day.
